Memorial Day

This memorial day I was able to experience something that lives up to the name. Lantern Floating (www.lanternfloatinghawaii.com) in Honolulu, Hawaii has been going on for 10 memorial days. People write on lanterns names of ancestors, loved ones who have passed, people who have suffered in war, and suffered in natural disasters. The celebration and gathering has an overarching feeling of unity and a message of remembrance and peace.
There were amazing Hawaiian performances, honorary guests including Buddhist, Christian and political leaders. But what was more amazing than all of the performances was looking out into the ocean of floating lanterns and thinking about every single life that these lights represent. Then the hope and desire flooded in to bring peace to the lives here today that will be the future lanterns decades from now. Starting with the person I know best.
