Back to Nature

I had an amazing week last week enjoying the Adirondack mountains with my mom and David (her new husband). I also got to see some good friends from way back before I had any college degrees. One which I will help move to Colorado in October.. ROAD TRIP! WEEEEHAWW. It will be great to see some of the USA after traveling all over.
Also my new waterproof camera is still bringing me great joy. This picture below is IN the waterfall.

Reuniting with Buddies

With friends like these who wouldn't want to reunite and get lots of hugs?
Yesterday these crazy kids drove to visit my sis's house in celebration of my graduation. It was during the hurricane soupy weather so we spent most of our time inside in A/C. A little game of bullshit was played some talent performances and some dutch beer and dinner were served. It was really cool to share the Dutch culture with my friends, however I'm not so sure they all loved the dinner but hey the Dutch aren't known for their cooking so I must have accurately represented. The stroopwafles were a big hit though! It was so nice to be with people who know my past, however getting them all together in one room and discussing my love life made it hard for me to keep my face a normal shade of tan/brown/cream.

doggie paddle

A closer underwater look at how the doggie paddle is really done. River Reynolds has great swimming form here. Thanks to my new underwater digital camera years of mystery have been solved today.

typical dutch eating

Before I left the Netherlands there was one last thing I HAD to do. Eat raw herring from the market. Here are my roomate and I "enjoying it".

Crazy last week!

My last week in the Netherlands was stressful, exciting and without sleep. My mom flew over to experience it all with me. I presented and defended my final thesis, received my diploma and of course celebrated! Then it was time to pack and leave to be home in time for my friends pre-wedding festivities. I woke up this morning after sleeping 14 hours I think I am finally starting to become a human again!

Responding to a question during my thesis defense.

Waiting for the professors and supervisors to decide on my grade and come back to tell me. Still explaining thesis to interested classmates to pass the time.

Receiving my diploma.

Celebrating with moms!

Celebrating with EPA sistas!

Celebrating with my Boterbrug family/roomies!

Celebrating with the most beautiful couple in the world!

Some very good ideas

I know everyone has their political preferences, but despite those, the ideas in this speech and the world view shared is worth listening to regardless of your political stance.

Play the you tube video at this link.

"Partnership and cooperation among nations is not a choice; it is the only way, it is the one only way, to protect our common security and advance our common humanity,"

Magnetic field

Very fascinating stuff, just now trying to understand how they work. Yesterday I heard about how magnetic fields are used for speakers "The coil generates a magnetic field when electricity is applied to it. The magnet attracts or repels the coil and makes it to move. The vibration generates the sound that we hear thanks to the air."

Then today I read about the loss of mars' magnetic field, "The loss of Mars' magnetic field may have played a critical role in the planet's evolution from the warm and wet world scientists suspect it was into the cold, dry desert that exists today.

Magnetic fields, similar to Earth's, protect planets from cosmic rays. They also help maintain the atmosphere by shielding molecules from solar radiation."

But I still don't understand the very very basics of magnetism. Of course the attraction and repelling around the poles I understand, but how in this world does magnetism exist? Is it just one of those things like gravity that you accept but can never fully understand? Who is a physics major help me out here!

Weekend Fun With my Roomies

This is me in front of the street I live on Boterbrug.

And here are a couple of pictures from last weekend. My roomates Gene, Piter and I played some baseball and went to an Amusement park where there was also a petting zoo very cute goats.. trying to beat the boredom a bit and it worked! FUN FUN FUN.

The Pacific Rim

I really am looking forward to learn more about the Pacific Rim region of the world. I am currently applying for a job in FIJI! They want 8 years of experience, but besides that the rest of the specifications for skills match up perfectly. Anyway I have to dream right!

Also I am heading to visit Australia in the fall for 3 weeks. I met some aussie friends in Hawaii and my sister's good friend lives there too. I can't wait to see some of the most beautiful beaches and catch waves again! I desperately have been missing the ocean since I've been back in The Netherlands.

On my thesis front, I am finished, however I am taking extra time to improve my report at this point I think it would be silly to just "hand it in and be done". For those of you with free time and interest I am looking for editors! Mom and Sarah you don't get a choice!
